Pre-Laser Care: Everything You Need to Know Before the Procedure

If you are planning to undergo laser treatment, you should know how to prepare correctly It is essential to ensure safety, comfort, and better results. Lasers are great allies in the treatment of blemishes, enlarged pores, rejuvenation, melasma, spider veins, and scars—but their success begins... even before the session.

What can't you do before laser treatment?

Avoiding certain habits and products is crucial to prevent skin irritation or interference with treatment. Before laser treatment, not recommended:

  • Sunbathing or artificial tanning in the previous 2 weeks;

  • Using self-tanners;

  • Using acids such as retinol, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid. 3 to 7 days before (depending on the concentration and medical advice);

  • Performing aggressive procedures, such as deep exfoliation or recent chemical peels;

  • Using photosensitizing medications, such as Roacutan (isotretinoin) — in this case, it is necessary to discontinue use for at least 6 months beforehand (under medical supervision).

How long before laser treatment should I avoid sun exposure?

Ideally, avoid it. direct sun exposure for at least 15 days before from the application. This includes beaches, swimming pools, trails, and outdoor sports. Tanned or sunburned skin is at greater risk of Spots and hyperpigmentation after laser treatment.

Can I get laser hair removal if I have tanned skin?

No. Tanned skin is sensitive and may react inappropriately to the heat of the laser. This can lead to... burns, blisters, spots or even hypopigmentationIt is essential that the skin be in its natural tone for greater safety.

Can I wear makeup or moisturizer on the day of the procedure?

On the day of the procedure, the skin should be completely cleanAvoid using makeup, perfumed creams, or oily products. If possible, arrive at the appointment. no makeup and no sunscreen applied, to facilitate the assessment and cleansing of the skin before laser treatment.

What medications and substances should I avoid before laser treatment?

Avoid:

  • Antibiotics with a photosensitive effect (such as tetracycline or doxycycline);

  • Anti-inflammatories in the 2 days preceding the session (they can interfere with the controlled inflammatory response triggered by the laser);

  • Vitamin A in high doses;

  • Products containing benzoyl peroxide or sulfur derivatives..

Always inform your dermatologist about any medications you are using — even natural or herbal ones.

Who is not a candidate for laser treatment?

Therefore, Laser treatment is contraindicated. to:

  • People with active skin infections (such as herpes or open wounds);

  • Pregnant women (depending on the type of laser and area treated);

  • People with active autoimmune diseases;

  • Patients who have recently started using isotretinoin (Roacutan);

  • For those with sensitive, damaged, or tanned skin.

How should I prepare for facial laser treatment?

For the face, pre-laser care includes:

  • Avoid sun exposure and acids for at least 7 days.;

  • Hydrate your skin intensely in the days leading up to the session;

  • Use mild soaps and avoid exfoliants;

  • Discontinue the use of makeup and sunscreen on the day of application.

Why are pre-laser treatments so important?

Strictly following the pre-laser treatment instructions is what guarantees:

  • Increased safety during application.;

  • Lower risk of adverse reactions, such as spots or inflammation;

  • Shorter recovery time and Reduced downtime (or none, depending on the type of laser).
