Radiesse and sun exposure: how long should you wait to sunbathe after application?

  • Collagen Biostimulator, Post-Procedure Care, Aesthetic Dermatology, Rio de Janeiro
Find out how long you should avoid sun exposure after applying Radiesse and why this precaution is essential for a safe and harmonious result.

When choosing a biostimulator like Radiesse, it's natural to have questions about aftercare. One of the most frequent questions here at the clinic is: "When can I sunbathe after applying Radiesse?"

This is an important question because the success of the treatment depends not only on the application technique, but also on post-treatment care.

Why is it necessary to avoid sun exposure after Radiesse treatment?

Radiesse is a biostimulator composed of calcium hydroxyapatite, indicated for treating sagging skin and progressively improving skin firmness. After application, the following commonly occur:

  • Mild redness;

  • Slight swelling;

  • Small hematomas at the cannula entry points.

Sun exposure at this time can intensify these reactions and, in rarer cases, lead to the appearance of skin spots (hyperpigmentation).

The sun also promotes inflammation and collagen degradation, which goes against the desired effects of Radiesse.

How long should I wait before sunbathing?

In general, I advise my patients to avoid direct sun exposure for at least 7 days after the procedure. This timeframe may vary depending on:

  • The treated region;

  • The intensity of the application;

  • The individual skin response.

In cases of more noticeable bruising, it's best to wait until it disappears completely before sun exposure, even with sunscreen.

Remember that sun exposure isn't just limited to the beach or pool: walking down the street, doing outdoor activities, or driving also require protection.

How to protect your skin after a procedure.

After applying Radiesse, I recommend:

  • Use sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher, reapplying every 3 hours;

  • Avoid direct sun exposure during the first few weeks;

  • Do not wear makeup for the first 12 hours (or as directed individually);

  • Moisturize the skin and avoid irritating or acidic products on the treated area for the first few days.

These precautions enhance the results and help prevent complications.

Your behavior is part of the treatment.

In aesthetic dermatology, every step matters: from product selection to post-treatment care. And no matter how advanced the biostimulator is, how you care for your skin in the following days has a direct impact on the quality of the result.

That's why I always do a detailed assessment and give personalized guidance after each application.

How long does the lifting effect last?

The immediate results of Radiesse are visible right after application, and collagen production intensifies in the following months. The effect can last from... 12 to 18 months, with annual maintenance.

What is the difference between Radiesse and Sculptra?

Both are biostimulators, but there are important differences:

Feature Radiesse sculptra
Active substance Calcium Hydroxyapatite Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)
Action Filler + collagen Gradual collagen stimulation
Treated areas Face, hands, body Face and body
Immediate effect Yes No
Skin texture Firmness and thickening Smoothness and uniformity

The choice depends on the patient's goal and the medical indication. Often, the two can be used in a complementary way.

Schedule your evaluation.

If you're thinking about starting a Radiesse treatment, come talk to me. During the consultation, I'll analyze your skin, your habits, and your goals to recommend the best time and approach.

When in doubt, choose caution. This applies to sun exposure and to every decision throughout your treatment plan.

Medical evaluation is essential to understand the patient's complaints, identify dermatological problems, and consider their individual characteristics, such as anatomy, skin type, and reactions to substances used. Based on this, it is possible to determine the appropriate techniques to naturally enhance the features of the face, skin, and body.

Choosing a dermatologist is crucial for a thorough analysis of the areas of disharmony in the patient and to determine the necessary techniques, whether it be increasing volume, correcting angles, or symmetry. With a personalized and exclusive treatment plan, it is possible to meet the specific needs of each patient while respecting their limitations.
